1. What were some of the main points in Thomas Groome’s book, “What Makes Us Catholic?” Do you agree/disagree and why?

Some of the main points found in Thomas Groome's book, "What Makes Us Catholic," relate to who God is as a spiritual figure as well as how Catholics should faithfully live life. The book specifically states that spirituality is when one's faith is the anchor of life, and there is a palpable sense of God's presence in the everyday life ("What Makes Us Catholic."). The book also states that spirituality is always from God's spirit who prompts our own connections to God himself ("What Makes Us Catholic."). By including this information within the book, the author connects this to how God should be accepting of everyone. He also discusses how God encourages self - love, and that when we love ourselves, we can later transfer this love towards others ("What Makes Us Catholic."). Investing time into spirituality and acceptance of one another can therefore improve physical health ("What Makes Us Catholic."). Catholics and the church as a whole need to ultimately be more confident and committed to having faith for everyone. 2. What were some new things that you learned about Pope Francis’ life from the video clips?

I learned many different things about Pope Francis' life from the video clips we watched in class. Specifically, I learned that Pope Francis' real name is Jorge Bergoglio and is from Buenos Aires in Argentina. When he was younger, Pope Francis lived through extreme poverty, and was born to working Italian - immigrant parents. Pope Francis is a Jesuit and started his journey to becoming the Pope when he was 17. He continued on this journey when he was ordained a priest in 1969 and taught theology. Eventually, Pope Francis was elected pope on the 13th of March, 2013. Pope Francis was the first pope that wasn't from Europe to be chosen. Pope Francis' main aspiration is for those who are youth to be supported by those who love them, and for them to be courageous. To illustrate the life of Pope Francis, an image of him blessing a crowd is shown below, that shows the immense passion he has for God and the Catholic community as a whole.

3. What are different changes that Pope Francis is making to the way popes usually do things?

Pope Francis is making many different changes compared to how popes usually control the church. Compared to before he became pope when those who were a part of the LGBTQ community were not accepted by the church, Pope Francis has instead embraced these people and recognized them for staying true to themselves. Pope Francis has also worked to help those who were previously sexually assaulted by priests compared to those in the church who ignored these incidents. While previous popes were against women having abortions, Pope Francis has started to support this because he believes that no matter what they do in life, God will always support them. Pope Francis also believes that even if people divorce, they aren't committing adultery, and are still able to receive communion. Lastly, Pope Francis is against the more traditional and formal way of power within the church known as Clericalism. Pope Francis has ultimately made many different changes within the church that has benefitted a large amount of the Catholic community. 4. What hopes do you have for the present day Catholic Church?

I have many hopes for the present day Catholic Church. I wish that the Catholic Church was more accepting towards all ethnicities, races, and genders. I also wish that the Catholic Church was more welcoming to those who have an interest in becoming a follower of this religion. Within the church, I hope that Pope Francis continues to help stop global warming and climate change. I also hope that he continues to give consent towards those who contradict other previous popes of the Catholic Church. One major hope that I have for the Catholic Church, is for it to begin working with organizations such as UNICEF to help end world poverty and world hunger. By meeting this expectations, the Catholic Church will be able to deeply help everyone, both spiritually and socially. Blog Post #11: Bridge To The Present

1. What did you find interesting about the history of the Sisters of Notre Dame?

After being taught about the Sisters of Notre Dame, I learned many different interesting things related to their mission, history, and contributions to society. Specifically, I found it interesting that the Sisters of Notre Dame first began their journey of spreading Catholicism in Europe. Because of how influential their work was, they were later able to introduce Catholicism to those living in North America. I also found it interesting that the Sisters of Notre Dame worked directly with children that attracted many women to join them soon after. Because the Sisters of Notre Dame worked hard to try and bring new people to follow the Catholic faith, they were eventually able to establish Catholic schools, including NDB. I found it fascinating that without the Sisters of Notre Dame, I wouldn't be able to attend NDB and grow as a student both academically as well as spiritually. I ultimately really enjoyed learning more about the Sisters of Notre Dame and connecting this to high school, and am interested in discovering more about the history of our school in the near future. 2. What is something that you heard from the Alumnae Panel that stuck with you and why?

There were many different things that I heard from the Alumnae Panel which stuck with me. Specifically, one part of the Alumnae Panel where each of the alumnae talked about them wishing they took part in more high school activities such as going to dances or football games related to myself. As a sophomore, I haven't ever attended a Notre Dame dance or other school activities, because either I don't feel excited to take part or none of my friends want to go with me. After hearing about how the alumnae regretted not being very involved with school activities, I now want to start going to more so I can meet new people and try something new. The Alumnae Panel ultimately taught me that I should always try something new in high school, and I should enjoy it while it lasts. They also taught me that I need to live in the moment and always acknowledge everything that I am being taught at NDB, because all of this will later benefit me once I am an adult. 3. What does it mean to you to be a part of the Notre Dame Community?

Being a part of the Notre Dame Community allows me to grow closely with both my peers, teachers, and with my own faith. After becoming a student at NDB, I immediately felt supported, especially if I was feeling upset or stressed in school. As a current sophomore, the Notre Dame Community has helped me immensely with teaching me new, rigorous concepts, and growing me as a student and athlete. The Notre Dame Community has also introduced me to new people, including many that are currently my friends. Without the Notre Dame Community, I wouldn't enjoy high school as much and I wouldn't be able to perform well academically. It is ultimately a great privilege to attend NDB and to be a part of the Notre Dame Community. When the incoming freshmen begin high school next year, I want to help them transition into high school, similarly to how last year's seniors did with my freshmen class. 4. When you leave Notre Dame High School, what do you think are some values that will stay with you?

When I graduate from Notre Dame High School, there will be many different values that will stay with me as a continue to grow academically and into an adult. A specific value that will stay with me, is to always put all of my effort into my work. I also learned that I should always strive for the best, and never give up when wanting to reach my goals. Another moral that I will continue building upon after I leave NDB, is that everything happens for a reason. If something doesn't happen in the way that I would like it to, then I tell myself that something even better will happen in the near future to make up for this. One value from NDB that was incorporated throughout all four years of high school and relates to the theme of community, is to always know that there will always be people who love and support me, and that I will always be able to turn to them when I am having trouble in life. I ultimately learned many important morals so far as a sophomore at Notre Dame High School which I hope to increase and bring these with me once I graduate and continue working to accomplish my goals. 1. Which event that you learned about from the Church History textbook presentations did you find most interesting and why?

When reflecting on the Church History textbook presentations, the event that I found most interesting was Missions to North America. I didn't realize that Catholicism had been brought to North America only a few hundred years ago. I also didn't realize that Catholicism had a large European connection, and was specifically first followed by the Spanish and the French. I found it fascinating that one religion from areas thousands of miles away were able to spread to North America. As someone who lives in North America in the modern era, learning about Missions to North America has showed me how much of a major influence Catholicism has had on the world. This event has also showed me that Catholicism is one of society's most engaging and spiritual religions, and has shaped many peoples' lives and the occurrence of history as a whole. Missions to North America ultimately made me very curious about other aspects of how Catholicism came to be and what effect this religion will have on different cultures years later. 2. Which person whom you learned about from the Church History textbook presentations did you find most interesting and why?

One person that I learned about from the Church History textbook presentations and found the most interesting was Thomas Aquinas. I found it fascinating that he was able to bring two very controversial subjects, science and religion, together. I also found it interesting that because of Thomas Aquinas' work, I am now able to learn about both science and religion in school hundreds of years later. As someone who thoroughly enjoys science, I admire that Thomas Aquinas was able to fight for what he believed in and was able to bring two very strong subjects together. Originally, I only knew of well known figures who helped contribute solely to the making of Catholicism. After learning about Thomas Aquinas, I now know about someone who worked in two contrasting fields. Thomas Aquinas has ultimately showed me that when I am passionate about something, I need to show others and fight for what I believe in. 3. If you end up being known as an influential figure in history, what do you want to be remembered for?

If I ended up being known as an influential figure in history, I would want to be remembered as someone who paved the way for female sports medicine physicians working in male sports leagues. Currently, there are only a few female sports medicine physicians for professional male sports teams in the world. As someone who has the aspiration of having this career when I am older, I would not only want to take part in this job and help those on a sports team, but I would also want to help other females who want to do similar work to me. With this, I would also want to be an advocate who is able to change the pay rates between males and females in sports. Doing both of these things would transform how others perceive females taking part in professional athletics. This would also be helping the sports community across the globe, instead of just myself. I would ultimately want to be remembered and acknowledged for opening the doors for other females my age to work in an inclusive environment rather than in an area that is predominantly male. 4. How have you personally experienced growth (either mentally, emotionally or spiritually) after your own challenges in life?

I have personally experienced growth both mentally and physically after going through challenges in life. Specifically, I have grown as a soccer player. When I first began playing for the club team that I still currently play for, I always felt very nervous and even cried at times because I was afraid that I was going to play poorly and would upset my coach. With saying this, after playing for the team for over a year and improving my skills, instead of feeling anxious, I became confident. I began playing very well and scored over 10 goals, and have recently become captain. Controlling my emotions while playing have helped me become mentally stronger. Once I began 9th grade at NDB, I used this growth and experience from playing soccer to how I perform as a student. Within the first two months of school, I was very upset and stressed due to how much work I was being assigned and how much I was going to have to start studying to do well. Although I disliked school at first, once I became used to completing this work, I started to thoroughly enjoy school and started to feel an intellectual benefit because of how hard I was working. Both of these experiences have ultimately shaped the healthy, wise, and conscientious person that I am today, that I will always be improving upon as I get older. To illustrate this, a picture of me is shown below that was taken last summer which shows how much I have developed as a person, from the time I was born to the present.

Blog Post #9: Resilience

1. Could you ever see yourself sharing similar messages that your Letter Writer did? Why or why not? How would you share them?

I could see myself sharing similar messages to the motivational ones that Saint Peter did. I would do this to not only help myself, but to also help others, especially if they were going through hard times. Specifically, I would share messages about how it is up to us to control our future. I would also share messages about how those we love give us the strength to succeed in life. The main theme of the messages that I would share that relate immensely to Saint Peter's messages is that we must find strength through our weaknesses. We should also find something that we are passionate about, just as Saint Peter used God and the living stone, and use this to focus on and live life with. Because Saint Peter's messages were so inspirational to me after reading his letter, I could see myself sharing similar messages to relive his work within the modern era. To illustrate this, an image is shown below in which Saint Peter is leading the way with his keys to unlock his own personal kingdom, just as everyone should do in society as a whole.

2. What were some new things that you learned from the Marian apparition projects presented in class?

I learned many new things from the Marian Apparition projects presented in class. Specifically, I learned that Our Lady of Lourdes was a Marian Apparition who appeared to Saint Bernadette in a golden cloud that came out of a rock at the Grotto of Massabielle in 1858 that led to his sainthood. She believed that everyone should live a happy life in the next world, rather than the one we are living in now. I also learned about Our Lady of Akita, who was a woman who appeared to Sister Agnus in Japan in the form of light and caused her hands to bleed as well as the statue of Mary that was located right by them. A shrine was built for Our Lady of Akita because she believed that everyone should pray for each other so we can later be healed, including the sinners so we can show them the ways of the Lord. After Our Lady of Knock was presented to me, I learned that her apparition occurred in 1879 in Knock, Ireland, where she appeared to 15 people along with St John and St Joseph on an alter of a church. She gave the people of Ireland hope because of expressing her resilience to them even though her apparition was silent, in which a shrine was later built for her. The last Marian Apparition that I learned about was Our Lady of Fatima, who appeared on the 13th day of every month and was constantly seen by 3 children, including one known as Lucia. The three main secrets of Our Lady of Fatima were the insights of Hell, being devoted to the Immaculate Heart, and wanting everyone to pray for all of the lost souls that gave her the acknowledgment to have a shrine built for her in the Portuguese village where she was first seen. To illustrate what I learned from the Marian Apparition projects, an image is shown below in which a group of people are praying to the church where a Marian Apparition came to years ago, specifically in Ireland where Our Lady of Knock appeared.

3. How did you see resilience at work within the Marian apparition that you researched?

Our Lady of Guadalupe was very resilient throughout her life, especially towards those who questioned her existence. After Our Lady of Guadalupe met Juan Diego and he told the Spanish Bishop about her request to build a church at the site where she was standing, the bishop did not believe him and asked for a miraculous sign to prove Our Lady of Guadalupe’s existence and relation to Jesus. Rather than feeling let down about how the Spanish Bishop not believing that she was a true Marian Apparition, Our Lady of Guadalupe continued to gain the support of Juan Diego. She eventually performed a miracle as a result of using the strength and determination she had built up after the Bishop didn't accept her and becoming closer with Juan Diego. Once the Spanish Bishop and Juan Diego became true believers of her after what she had done, later on, millions of Mexicans began worshiping her. Resilience ultimately allowed Our Lady of Guadalupe to grow into such a significant figure both historically as well as in the modern era, remaining a powerful symbol of Mexican identity and faith, motherhood, feminism, and social justice. To illustrate how resilience impacted Our Lady of Guadalupe's life, an image is shown below in which she is using her power and faith to pray for all of those around and disregard those who don't believe in her.

4. Do you see yourself as being resilient? Why or why not?

I see myself as someone who is both resilient as well as sensitive at times. I can be resilient when I get physically hurt, because I know that I am always strong enough to handle it and quickly heal. I am also resilient when I don't perform well on tests at times, because instead of becoming upset, I use this as a learning performance and usually do better the next time. Although I am resilient at times, I can also let other moments take control of me, causing me to start to break down. This occurs when I am criticized by others or myself in instances such as being compared to in athletics. If someone tells me that I didn't perform well including while playing for my club soccer team, yet others are praised for their work, I become let down and feel that I am not good enough. I also become more intimidated by my coaches as I don't want to mess up the next time. Although this part of me not being resilient has affected my performance within the past few years, I have begun to improve my confidence and instead play soccer with the mindset that my coaches are only pointing what I am doing wrong to improve me as a player. To illustrate the combination of resilience and weakness I have as a person, an image is shown below in which a person first thinks that they should give up, but are now trying to find the courage and strength to continue running, similarly to how I feel like giving up at times yet push through to achieve my goals.

Blog Post #8: Suffering

1. In what ways did the people you learned about during this unit suffer? What was their reaction to their suffering?

There were many apostles within this unit that suffered horribly after trying to spread Christianity among others. Specifically, in Acts 5:12 - 41, Peter and John suffered when they were arrested twice for preaching God's word and had to be locked up in jail for many days before being rescued by an angel sent from God. In Acts 14:8 - 20, before Paul came to the town of Lystra to bring in more people to follow God, a man named Barnabas who lived here was unable to walk and had to go through the pain of not being able to live a normal life until he was later healed by Paul. In Acts 18:1 - 17, Paul had to suffer when he was attacked by the Jews and the Governor of Corinth whilst preaching that Jesus was the Messiah before Gallio later stood up for him and stopped the attack. In Acts 27:13 - 26, before Paul and his men were supported by God whilst sailing at sea, they had to endure the possibility of losing their lives when their ship began falling apart in a powerful storm. Lastly, in Acts 28:17 - 31, Paul had to suffer when he was arrested in Jerusalem because of promoting his religious beliefs to others before they began to believe him. When reflecting on these instances where Peter, John, Paul, and Barnabus had to suffer, although they were constantly being put down at first, they weren't upset and didn't give up, but instead continued to live up to God's word by inspiring themselves and others. Rather than feeling degraded by the people that arrested/beat them after not believing in their preachings, these apostles instead used the faith and strength they had gained from God to continue spreading his word and later bringing in thousands of followers. After learning about these different experiences where apostles had to suffer after standing up for something they strongly believe in, this has motivated me and has taught me to never give up on something I am passionate about, because nothing is impossible. To illustrate the ways in which these apostles suffered and how this had affected them as well as myself as a learner, an image is shown below in which Peter and John are being persecuted in court for upsetting the high priest after preaching about Jesus.

2. Which story from the Acts of the Apostles did you find most inspiring and why?

When reflecting on the Acts of the Apostles, the story about Paul preaching at Rome under guard in Acts 28:17 - 31 was the most inspiring to me as a reader. In this story, Paul was arrested in Jerusalem for preaching about God but later released until people began protesting against him again. With saying this, Paul ignored the hate he had gained from others living here during this time, and instead continued preaching for the people that believed in him that consequently allowed God to gain so many followers later on as a result of his work. This story taught me that although there may be people who can put me down at times and can be in the way of a dream that I want to accomplish, I need to ignore them and instead use this as motivation to do even better. I found this story inspiring because Paul was a perfect example of how difficult it can be sometimes when we have to stand up for something we are passionate about or want to accomplish something but are too afraid to do so. As shown by his work, if I am ever doubting myself at first, I need to stop and instead focus on why I want to get past what ever I am afraid of rather than stepping back and believe in myself. I have ultimately found this story from the Act of the Apostles about Paul very helpful, and I will think of this the next time I am having trouble accomplishing one of my goals. To illustrate this story and the impact it has had on myself, an image of a shining star is shown below that symbolizes both the Star of Bethlehem that inspired the wise men to travel and meet Jesus that allowed him to become noticed by others as well as the motivation I have gained after reading this story that I will start using in my life as a whole with the support from Jesus and God.

3. How have you experienced challenges in your own life and how have you dealt with them?

I have experienced many different challenges within my own life that I have had to later overcome. Specifically in school, there has been an occasion where I haven't performed as well as I would have hoped to on a test that I studied a lot for. Although I was very upset with myself at first, using the support from my parents, I didn't use the time after being given my poor result to grieve, but I was instead able to learn from the mistakes I made and later do well on the next test I had. Another experience that was very challenging was when I was trying out for a competitive club soccer team. I was very nervous and I knew that I had to make the team to play at a better level, but a few days after tryouts when I was told that I didn't make it and was instead a practice player (I could only attend the practices and wasn't on the full game roster), I was extremely upset. With saying this, after crying a lot, I was able to become a much better player once I began practicing with them. It was shown that my hard work and perseverance had payed off, because the next season, I was offered a spot on the team and have currently won many different tournaments and league titles so far. After reflecting on how I was able to deal with the challenges relating to school and sports, this has taught me that everything will work out in the end, and it is just up to how hard I work that will truly determine how successful I am later on. 4. Who are people that you can turn to in times of need and why?

When I am in need of help, there are many different people that I can turn to that will support me. One group of people that I go to first are my family. Because they have known me my entire life, I know that they will help me and guide me to what is best for my life as a whole. My family are also very understanding, welcoming, and listen to what my heart is saying whenever I am having trouble in life that allows me to feel very connected with them. In certain situations, if I don't feel that it is right to speak with my parents, I enjoy going to my close friends for support. Our similarities in age and experiences in school and sports allow us to fully understand and relate to each other. My friends are also very trustworthy and accepting and always give advise no matter how difficult the situation is. When I need to speak with others in times of need, my family and my best friends are ultimately who I go to because of how loving they are.
